An exhibition featuring kinetic works by 3 national artists

Artist Reception: Saturday, September 23rd, 2006 7pm-10pm

Show runs: September 23 - October 29, 2006

Featuring the artists: Billie Grace Lynn, Jackson Martin, and Matti Havens

Using vibrational, rotational and translational forms of kinetic energy, each artist's work takes varied forms. It is this energy of motion, common to all, that conceptually links the aesthetic experience of the show.

Originally from Louisiana, Miami-based artist, Billie Grace Lynn uses kinetic components, frequently coupled with human power, to create highly engaging, interactive works that address the individual in contrast to the mechanics of political governance and policy. Featured works include, a fully operational, performative sculpture, Homeland Security Vehicle, which asks questions about the current political climate, government surveillance, the infringement of civil liberties and the individuals right to privacy. In a companion video work, Lynn usurps the inherent power inequalities and inverts the direction of scrutiny in a site specific performance.

Current Maryland Institute Graduates Jackson Martin and Matti Havens focus on the origins of energy. Martin creates a moody environment in the front gallery with one lamp, mirrors and plants and grasses that are able to photosynthesize by reflective light around the gallery. Havens uses projected images of fire, water and air as sources of energy.

This exhibition is free, open to the public, and handicapped accessible. For more information about the gallery or this exhibition, please call (410) 528-2101.

Area 405 is located at 405 East Oliver Street, Baltimore, MD 21202.
