First Flush: Ambient Techno with Ceremonial Tea

  • Area 405 405 East Oliver Street Baltimore, MD, 21202 United States (map)

AREA 405 and Stone Chamber collective presents First Flush. This Sunday series feature ambient techno with ceremonial tea and a comfortable sofa lounge, debuting three (3) resident DJs of the collective, Sovar, MÅNG, and KLIX, to the Baltimore electronic music scene.

First Flush is—
[noun] The first and most tender spring harvest of tea leaves;
[noun] The initial dirtiest stormwater runoff;
[phrase] The early exciting stage of a new experience.

Like its namesake, First Flush is a new kind of techno gathering in an industrial space.

In recent years, younger generations in China have explored ways of combining underground club culture with drug-free, health-oriented lifestyles rooted in the concept of 养生 (yǎng shēng, "holistic well-being"). On one hand, this phenomenon has created new cultural intersections between tea culture and a techno scene that has historically been Western-centric. On the other, it brings techno music into daytime settings, creating an accessible entry point for broader audiences. It also reclaims daytime public space for the queer and subcultural communities that have long been central to the underground scene, making visible forms of identity and self-expression that are often associated with nightlife and after-hours venues.

Attendees of the event are welcome to bring books, sketchpads, and laptops to enjoy the sofa lounge throughout the day. Conceived as a Sunday daytime gathering, the event offers a high-energy third space dedicated to focused work, reading, and creative thinking.

First Flush serves as a tribute to Pride Month, honoring the deep roots of electronic music within LGBTQIA+ communities and celebrating the creative contributions of Black, Indigenous, and other marginalized communities of color whose innovations shaped the genre.
