The Art of Caring Art Auction

Join Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for The Art of Caring, where art and advocacy unite to create a brighter future for Baltimore's children. This signature event is more than an art auction—it's a powerful experience of connection, creativity, and community impact.

On Sunday, June 29, at 3 PM, Area 405 will come alive with stunning one-of-a-kind art pieces available for silent auction, with all proceeds supporting victims of child abuse and neglect. Together, we’ll support CASA’s mission to protect Baltimore’s most vulnerable children while showcasing the incredible talent of our local artists.

This event has something for everyone! Enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres, an open bar, face painting for the kids, and enchanting live instrumentals. Connect with artists, corporate and civic leaders, CASA board members, staff, and volunteers, all united in their commitment to the health and safety of our city’s youth.

Special Highlights:
- Celebrate and honor outstanding volunteers and community champions.
- Learn how you can make a difference in the lives of children through CASA.
- Be inspired by the collective impact of a community working together for change.

Visualizing Trans Futures: A Poetry Workshop with Max Gregg

Red Rae with Max Gregg

Ekphrasis (from the Greek, meaning, to speak out or to call by name) refers to the written description of a work of art. This ekphrastic workshop is designed in response to Paradise Portals, a reality-bending video installation series which invites us into intimate spaces of trans pleasure, history, futurity, and engagement with the natural world. Writing on location in the gallery space at Area 405, we will explore the visual on the page through a series of generative prompts and exercises; together, we will ask how these works of art open portals in each of us, to new realms of creative expression.

Closing Reception

Poster of Exhibition Trembling Grounds: Push-Pull Practice, Visual Design by Xin Tan.

Witness the last and also take a moment to reflect on the values we hold — polycentric, becoming, collaboration. By returning to our workshop explorations and interventions, and revisiting the crossings, tensions, and temporary structures built in the process, we step into the exhibition’s dynamic exploration of instability, transformation, and rebellion, transcending temporal and spatial boundaries.

###

Exhibition Trembling Grounds: Push-Pull Practice dismantles and reconfigures the boundaries of art-making. The show spotlights nine artists — Deborah Castillo, Roman Sheppard Dawson, Sasha Fishman, Elli Fotopoulou, Maya Gurantz, Scott Keightley, Lucia Shuyu Li, Andrew Luk, and Yuhan Shen — whose works delve into multi-centered discourses and span disciplines including performance, video, interdisciplinary sculpture, and site-specific installation. By bringing together these constantly evolving practices, Trembling Grounds examines the concept of "crossing" as a transformative act — crossing subjects, media, languages, physical walls, restrictions, and so on. Crossing is not merely a movement but a rebellion, an active, dynamic force that traverses media and unsettles the familiar.

Opening Reception Poster, Visual Design by Xin Tan

Door at 5:00 p.m.

Maya Gurantz presents Endurance Performance Proposition #2 (Lenny Bruce Live at Carnegie Hall), a durational engagement reanimating the raw volatility of Bruce’s infamous 1961 performance, interrogating the friction between comedy, free speech, and bodily limits. Lucia Shuyu Li’s SING!SING!SING! explores vocal endurance as both rebellion and release of body movement and functionality.
